Jukebox Film Club: Married to the Music

October 25, 2025
Institute of Contemporary Arts

Married to the Music, the explosive new documentary from director Garo Berberian, charts the wild rise of dance music — from its birth in the gay black clubs of Chicago, through Manchester’s acid house revolution, the outlawed days of illegal raves and pirate radio, to its unstoppable global takeover. It’s the story of a genre that terrified the establishment and captured the hearts of young people worldwide.

At the centre of the film is DJ Sam Divine, the First Lady of House Music, who opens up with rare honesty about her rise to fame in an industry rife with inequality and misogyny, and her own struggles with addiction and mental health in a relentless world of house music — which she loves with a burning passion. Her fight for equality for female DJs exposes an industry where women still account for only 30% of festival acts.

Filmed over eight years, Married to the Music also features heavyweight names such as Hannah Wants, Smokin Jo, Lisa Pin-Up and Roger Sanchez, as well as a previously unseen interview with the godfather of house music Frankie Knuckles, with an incredible soundtrack of dance anthems by New Order, Rudimental, Kings of Tomorrow, Jack’N’Chill, Defected Records, Tidy Trax, Lisa Lashes, Jess Bays — and Sam Divine herself. The film was selected as one of Film London’s breakthrough documentaries in 2024 at their London Screenings.

Followed by an in-person Q&A session hosted by music journalist Sophia Hill and a DJ set by DJ Pinks. Presented by Jukebox Film Club.
