The Last Repair Shop

January 16, 2024
Norris Cinema Theatre, Frank Sinatra Hall at USC

Outside the Box [Office], USC Thornton School of Music, USC Institute of Armenian Studies, Armenian Film Society, and Breakwater Studios, invite you to join us for a special theatrical screening of The Last Repair Shop, followed by a Q&A with Ben Proudfoot and Kris Bowers.

Los Angeles is the largest and one of the last American cities to provide free and freely repaired musical instruments to its public schoolchildren, a continuous service since 1959. From Academy Award-nominated directing duo Ben Proudfoot and Kris Bowers, The Last Repair Shop grants access to the nondescript, downtown warehouse in which a dwindling handful of devoted craftspeople keep over 80,000 student instruments in good repair. The film is led by the charming general manager, Steve Bagmanyan, who faced ethnic persecution in Azerbaijan in the 1980s. The Last Repair Shop has been shortlisted for Best Documentary Short Film at the 2024 Academy Awards. 39 minutes.
