Army of Shadows

February 21, 2024
Los Feliz 3 at the American Cinematheque

On February 21, French-Armenian poet, Armenian Genocide survivor, and leader of the French Resistance, Missak Manouchian, along with his wife Mélinée, a writer and fellow résistante, will be inducted into France’s Panthéon, the eternal resting place of the country’s greats.

Join us for a screening of Jean-Pierre Melville's ARMY OF SHADOWS at the Los Feliz 3 at the American Cinematheque, co-presented by Villa Albertine, Consulate General of France in Los Angeles, University of California, Irvine’s Center for Citizen Peacebuilding, and Armenian Film Society. This screening pays tribute to the Manouchians and the Resistance movement.

Army of Shadows centers on Philippe (Lino Ventura)– aided by Resistance compatriots including maitresse of disguise Mathilde (Simone Signoret), he goes underground in the face of the German Occupation, but the price of heroism can be truly horrific.

Q&A with Daniel Brunstetter, Ph.D., Professor, Political Science, University of California, Irvine, and Emilie Garrigou-Kempton, Ph.D., French Instructor, Pasadena City College, and specialist in Holocaust remembrance and Monique Saigal-Escudero, born under Nazi occupied France and author of French Heroines, 1940-1945: Courage, Strength and Ingenuity.
